National Grid Responds

Cape Cod Commission’s meeting with National Grid – Responses to Technical questions from March 6, 2015 meeting:
“In addition to the prohibitions on new service connections in the impacted towns, the moratorium restricts any increase in natural gas use by existing customers in these communities through the installation of new gas appliances or certain types of equipment, including conversions of existing non-heating accounts to using natural gas for heating.”    read the full report:  Shortage of Permits

Business Owner Speaks Out

By Christine Legere

Lester Wade has run a successful generator sales, installation and maintenance business for a decade now, but news of the moratorium on all new and expanded natural gas hookups in eight Cape towns has him angry and worried those days may be over.

“How does this even happen?” asked Lester Wade about National Grid’s abruptly announced moratorium earlier this week. “If you have a small business that depends on this and they’re saying the moratorium will last five to seven years, no one can hang on that long.”

Wade, who owns Cape Cod Independent Power in Mashpee, found out about the moratorium Tuesday morning via a story in the Times. “I thought, ‘my business is effectively shut down as of this morning,’ ” Wade said.

One hundred fifty miles away in Hadley, MA located in Western Massachusetts:

“Berkshire Gas Imposes Hampshire County Hookup Moratorium Blocking Projects in Amherst, Hadley While Calling for Kinder Morgan Pipeline.”

By Jim Kinney
jkinney@repub.com

Berkshire Gas Company worried about pipeline capacity and its ability to obtain sufficient supplies of natural gas, is already turning down requests for new gas service in Amherst, Hadley and Hatfield.

The freeze on new piped-in gas service has many developers scrambling to find alternatives, such as costly tanks for trucked-in propane.

“This will stop development,” said Tim Neyhart, Hadley building commissioner. “Its serious. We are not going to see any new business go in.”

‘”The halt to new service will last at least three years.”

“We can’t sell what we don’t have. We don’t make any money from saying ‘no’,” said Berkshire Gas spokesman Christopher C.Farrell said. “We are a public utility. We are not in the business of making threats and playing politics.”
